  • Bad Beer

Some beers are just so bad that others need to be warned against them. Add yours that you think are bad!

Here are South African brands that I would run away from:
Oakes (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/oakes-brew-house/17006/) [Not to be mistaken with Two Okes or Three Oaks]
    Three Skulls (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/thre...w-works/14038/)
    Roeks (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/booz...llywood/14766/)
    Boston (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/bost...h-africa/5590/)
    Wild Beast (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/wild...brewing/16869/)
    Savage (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/savage-brewing/21792/)
    Mitchells (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/mitc...-brewery/2125/)
    Garagista (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/gara...beer-co/19830/)
    Riot (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/riot/21185/)
    The Commissioner (http://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/the-...company/19034/)

This list is not exhaustive by any means!
These breweries are on this list because their beers are infected and/or badly brewed.

I love Mitchell's, especially 90/- and old Wobbly. Nothing wrong with David's stuff either

But if we all had the same taste in beers the world would be boring.
Give a man a beer, waste an hour. Teach a man to brew, and waste a lifetime!

I am not talking about "I like this, I don't like this", I am talking about beers that smell/taste like baby vomit, sauerkraut, metallic, disinfectant, newspaper, etc. Obvious off-flavours/aromas.

I used to love Mitchells, but the past three times that I brought their beers the beers were off. I contacted them and got replacements... that were also off.

As for David's beers; The beers that I tasted was tasted by two other high ranking BJCP Beer Judges, and all three of us found the beers to be undrinkable. Two of us contacted David via email where he told us he would replace the beers but then never contacted us again. The other judge spoke to David at an event and asked him about the beer; apparently David was not too approachable.

Maybe it is because you can get the beers fresh. Maybe take a Michells Bosuns and leave it in a cupboard for a month or two. Maybe then you get to experience the beer as we get it in Jhb.

I try to be objective in my ratings. I have rated beers very high, even if I did not enjoy them. I recently worked my way through a lot of Belgian Sour beers and it was difficult! But some of those beers scored really well because they taste/smell as the style recommends. I have beers that I rated badly even though I like the brewer and vice versa.

I love Trigger Fish Titan but a good 50 % of the time it is skunked . I still buy it though in the hope it is drinkable lol

Tip for anyone who makes/buys a bad beer. Re-Cap it. wait for the next braai and give it to the person who had the most close to the end of the evening.
The beer receives pretty awesome reviews then! and its not wasted!

i've only ever had three skulls twice. the first one was very fresh and enjoyable. the second one was off.

as long as i breathe, i'll never spend money on wild beast. every single one i've tried has been off.

boston, i've never liked anything they've made. they're just so bland and boring. i feel the same way about cbc.

on the flip side though, i don't mind mitchells at all and garagistas tears of the hipster was one of the best beer experiences i've had in a long time.

We need to tread lightly here as the brewers does not have right of reply. I do think we in Gauteng are at peril to the logistics companies and shop owners that buys in bulk and not store the beer properly.

Buddy of mine also noted this in the past month. It is quite sad as Mitchells was my intro into the world of non commercial beer in 2004 (just started drinking). Same buddy had a Devil's Peak king's Blockhouse at capital craft that tasted oily...

Worst beer I've had was my first AG batch that was crawling with infections due to k@k sanitation...
              Primary: APA
Bottled: Quad, tripel, K@K red ale
Keg 1: Weiss. 2: Weiss. Keg 3: Air. Keg 4: Air
              Next up: world domination

I have contacted most of those breweries and told them that they have problems. Some of them respond. A few of them treat me like a child with "it is the hops that you are not used to in the SAB beer you usually drink" type of comments. That is usually the moment where I never drink their beers ever again.

But; I have had bad beers where the brewer was apologetic and replaced the beer with a new beer (or a few new beers). I have had brewers thank me for notifying them and that, because of my email, they did research and found a problem in their system that they were not aware of. One brewer was not even aware that his beer was being sold in Gauteng! :O He was furious! One other brewer found out his distribution company was not pulling the old beers off the racks, which lead to me having an old beer.

Some breweries are beyond help, or just refuse to listen. The good news is that their equipment will be up for grabs at some time soon!

                  Ignorance is bliss.

I've enjoyed Oakes and Roeks, but I wasn't doing critical drinking so I wasn't looking for any off flavours.

On Sunday I went to Loco Liq and collected about 15 local "craft" beers.

So far I have rated 11 and 9 of them went down the drain. I have heard back from some of the breweries, so no names will be published yet.

It is just shocking when you get so excited about new beers, take the time to add them to sites, carefully type in all the information, take photos, and then the beer is crap...

The positive side, I am getting amazingly good at picking up Diacetyl (buttered popcorn, butterschotch), lactic sourness and baby vomit. So I have that going for me.

Rather than dumping all those bad beers why don't you pour them in a 25 liter bucket. When the bucket is full then call me and I will come and collect and give you a replacement bucket. I throw that 25 liters into my home still and get some pretty decent distill out of them.

First reason: I am afraid that it might become sentient and kill everyone.
Second reason: I doubt that you will drive to Jhb for 25 liters of bad beer!
Third reason: I would feel sorry for the bucket.

I quickly went through your ratebeer profile and I would stay far away with my beer from you. But maybe you can tell me what off flavours you're getting from mine...

Which Loco Liq do you buy from?
