    Hi

Looking for a large glass carboy. Where can I find one for a good price ? I'm in Cape Town.

Thanks Jigsaw, I might have to go this route but was hoping their was a deal to be had. If not, plastic bucket it has to be for now.

You are in wine country, so these things are quite common. Do you have any wineries that you are friends with? Ask them for the glass DEMI-JOHNS that their cleaning/sterilizing chemicals come in.

Otherwise, plastic buckets are cheap! Get them from West Pack, plastic land, etc. Try to get white as they are closer to food grade, but it is not a major issue.

Not to mention the actual food-grade buckets cost like R65 for a 25l one. I would also LOVE to get my hands on a large 27-litre glass carboy, but their prices don't make it attractive for me at all.

I got my 34 liter demijohn from CDS Vinteq in Paarl. Bacchus also had.

Who has used the plastic water cooler bottles. They are manufactured to hold 18L. Large bung fits tightly. Im just concerned the short life span of the plastics being used for health reasons.

I saw a video of a dude who's made several brews in one the other day - he doesn't fault it. Their biggest pro is that at their price, they can be replaced often. It's here:

                          I’ve used them as well.
I’m just curious about the bag squeezing action going on there.
Was that not big no-no? Fear of excess tannins.

That myth has been busted ... I've been squeezing the bag since day one.

AFAIK it's been discussed on these forums before

Bigger breweries agitate the mash with a continuous rake, so I guess squeezing the mash a bit should be fine.
