  • Kitchen hardware that is actually great for brewing

In this tough economic times I try to find cheaper alternatives to expensive brewing equipment, so which normal household kitchen hardware is actually great for brewing?

    I have:
Oven grid - Use as a place to put the BIAB bag above the kettle to drain.
Pizza tray with a few nuts and bolts - Keep the BIAB bag from touching the element
Stainless mixing bowl - Reduce surface area in boil kettle to achieve a rolling boil (thanks kingcur)
Kitchen scale - Hops and grain weighing
    Primary: APA
Bottled: Quad, tripel, K@K red ale
Keg 1: Weiss. 2: Weiss. Keg 3: Air. Keg 4: Air

I also use the oven grid to drain the bag. Works excellent!

I use from my WIFES kitchen:

      Pyrex measuring jug
      Weight scale for hops
2x small sauce pan/pots (boiling dextrose for carbonating bottles and boiling the brew bag)

Same here for the hops, and I usr the kitchen candy thermometer for mash temp. Big soup pot just so happens to be a good BK

I used to use the Pyrex jug but after I used it to add liter markings on my Urn I realized the markings on it is quite inaccurate. I compared it to a Erlenmeyer flask and it is a few mls out. And on a 50L Urn made a very large difference.

I still use it to "sparge" wort through a lifted BIAB bag.

I forgot to mention that I use a pressure cooker and gas stove to speed up the time it takes to reach mash and boil temps

            Spoons
            Knives
            Scales
            Measuring Jugs
            Stove/Microwave
            Thermometer
            Pots
            Oven mitts
            Cloths
            Washing basin
            Washing machine
            Fridge
            Kettle
            Tongs
            Serving spoons
            White plates
            Freezer
            Brita water filter
            Bottle brushes
            Sosatie sticks
            Toothpics
            Plastic containers
            Plastic bags

I think those are things that I "borrow" from time to time. Some even go back to the kitchen!

Just be warned, once the wife allows you to use her toys, then your toys become fair game as well.

                That's a bit personal isn't it?

So basically, your brewery seems to be your wifes kitchen... Or is it the other way around

It's the other way around at my house. My wife has claimed more than a couple of items I initially purchased for brewing.

I only use it to drain the bag. Not for the grain.

Nope. I am not allowed to touch the Kenwood Food Processor and Blender.
