Yeah I saw when alcohol sales were back that they were on Facebook a lot more.
They said that they were crazy busy during lockdown.

Any Update on this? as I'm also wanting to upgrade my 50L logic urn, and I also sent a price request to basterfield... Wonder if I should just buy another logic urn as they are cheap, and just do two batches at the same time.. hmmm

I'm still undecided on the exact approach.

Either get a 100L basterfield urn with a 3000w element (they ignoring emails unfortunately)

Or get a stainless vessel and pop a low density element in with a tri clamp for easy cleaning.

          So they replied this morning

Looks like the normal powered option max size is 75l going at
          R2,121.75
I think 75l might just be enough for two kegs..

quick calculation think i should upgrade calc.JPG

75L will be enough for 2 x 30L kegs depending on fermenter losses.

That's a neat price for that thing, considering what you're getting.

For the sake of simplicity, Ill keep all my brew related stuff in this thread.

I did end up getting a quote from John @ Basterfield for about R5000 for a custom 100L urn with a single phase power 3000W urn. I am quite tempted to buy it, but seeing as my entire system only cost about that its a big financial step.

                        2020 goals achieved:

                        1. Started buying unmilled grains in bulk to lower brew cost and to have the ability to brew when ever I want.
                        2. Bought a Menace Mill
                        3. Storing an arrangement of grains in 50L sealable Jojo tanks - again gives me the freedom to brew when ever I want, and keeps grain fresh.

                        2021 goals in progress:

                        1. Built a stir plate - as per the above to reduce brewing cost even further
                        2. I want to start buying more local hops in bulk to reduce cost even further. Has anyone come across a guide of some sort with a side by side comparison of imported hops vs local? For example, instead of using X imported hop, just buy Y local hop.
                        3. Keg. Bought a large single door fridge, 3 x 19L corny kegs, 2kg CO2 bottle, regulator and all the bits and bobs. Aiming to get my rig up and running before Feb 2021. Something such as this: https://www.wortsandall.co.za/showth...s-2-Regulators The fridge is large enough to accommodate 2 kegs at the bottom and 3 shelves of beer, or 2 kegs, 1 x 25L fermenter (if a cold crash is needed, or if I make a lager) and 1 shelf of beer (see pic below)

                        2021 goals TBC:

                        1. My current control box is perfectly able to handle up to 3300w - so if I go the 100L urn route I have the ability to just migrate my current setup to the new one. I am quite keen to install a voltage regulator such as discussed here: https://www.wortsandall.co.za/showth...ll=1#post31818 Not really sure if its worth it tho.
                        2. If I upgrade I am also keen to ditch the bag and build a malt pipe.

                        My system (Franken Father):

40L urn, with custom control box, stand and dishwasher pump.

Edit: please excuse the horrible pictures, they were taken on the go in a combination of the laundry room and wendy house where the build took place

Taking inspiration from @Rikusj thread here: https://www.wortsandall.co.za/showth...version/page16 I assisted a buddy to build his own system. In the interest of keeping all my builds in one place I put some feedback on this build below:

                                50L Basterfield urn:

First things first, this urn seems to be of much higher construction quality than your standard Game specials. its heavy and the steel is much thicker. Not that I mind, but I saw some individual bends & marks on the steel, which leads me to believe this urn is made per order by hand. Its not a cookie cutter mass manufacture design like others.

The plastic tap is a piece of crap and luckily its straight swop 1/2inch to a ball valve tap, you only need the ball valve tap - no drilling, no extra washers etc required. I went with a stainless steel ball valve tap, plus 2 cam locks I picked up from https://www.ramadatrading.co.za/ Cost R280 for everything.

Since the element is exposed I am uncertain if the urn element will scorch in the future - maybe @Rikusj can share some feedback?

Something I absolutely love about this urn is the fact that the 50L urn is not a 50L urn. My own 40L urn only takes 40L to the brim, meaning I can technically only fill to about 35L. This 50L Basterfield urn takes a whopping 62L, meaning they give you enough headroom in the design to actually boil 50L - big points from me on this front.

At this point in time the system is untested, and I am contemplating to fit an elbow joint in the lid for the return pipe.

                                PUMP:

I am using a 15 year old dishwasher pump in my system so it was only natural to I buy the same pump @Rikusj is using for this build, I think it cost R350. Best tip here is to take the pump to builders and find the combination of garden fittings to make your pipe fit. I simply used resin to fix the garden connectors to the pump. For the silicone pipe, I could not find anything cheaper than this: https://www.autostyle.co.za/product/...se-kit-yellow/
Because the pipe is technically for a car application its VERY rigid, I think it will hold up well over time.

                                Control box:

As everyone will have their own design preference here there is not much to share here. I can recommend going to Mantech for parts as they are very affordable. A good tip is however to get the part codes online and call to place an order for collection, otherwise you will be there for hours. This 16A relay was used, and is also the cheapest I could find: https://www.mantech.co.za/ProductInfo.aspx?Item=14M5730
