What's your impression on SA hops?

    • Competition Helles is carbonating, and I pulled a small sample. It's not like "holy crap this is great", but it's not bad at all. I'll make it again, but just add more hops next time. It seems "lacking" to me, and yes, it's according to style, but it's just a bit bland for my tastes. There's a hint of that "flavour" I didn't like but by far the most of it lagered out. Overall a very, very lightly flavoured beer, and I think it might actually be a bit too "light", if that can be. It's a beer that went down to 1.009 from 1.048, so it packs a 5.1% ABV punch, but you wouldn't tell it from the taste.

I don't know if it's just my blocked nose, but to me it tastes like a Windhoek that's been mixed with water. This will get you very drunk, very fast, because it drinks like water. Guess I'll have to wait and see what the judges have to say.

What was your target IBU? I also hit 1.048SG with mine, will see where it ends.

        • Hmm.. What to brew tomorrow?? I definitely want to re-use my m54 cali lager cake again (this'll be it's 4th brew). Could I do a pils like this? Brewfather matched it to a Czech pale lager.

Recipe looks similar to a Pilsner Urquell. I've got one currently going in the fermenter.

            EDIT:

That's a decent amount of flavor and aroma hops for a lager. Should be great.

              • Looking to brew a sweet stout and would like some recipe suggestions please.

I've seen this recipe, which I also noted someone else on here brewed recently, for a toasted marshmallow milk stout. I like the idea of a the vanilla notes, but no idea if this is just a bit of a gimmick... https://www.clawhammersupply.com/blo...k-stout-recipe.

Would appreciate some suggestions on vanilla/chocolate/coffee/etc. stouts that people have made and enjoyed! Thanks!!

Been eying that one as well.

Brewcraft have this Behemoth breakfast stout clone that looks interesting. They sell it as a kit https://www.brewcraft.co.za/all-grai...Cb6-wXXN6_hf64

Hi think they are great, but not everyone will agree with me.
I especially like Southern Passion and Southern Arome.
Did my first beer with Southern Tropic a couple of weeks ago, so have yet to taste, heard good things about it.
Everyone must beleive in something, I beleive I'll have another beer

Can you point me in the direction of a recipe? I bought some southern passion and am yet to try it. Pale ale would be great.

Am I just dof?!? Is there a way to get the recipe they are talking about?

                          They look fine.

Did the one bellow , could always replace with Southern Passion.

                          • Oktoberfest seems done. 7 days today. Maintained 10psi pressure throughout. 4 points higher than expected FG. Could be 2 reasons.
                            1. The amount of caramel malt
                            2. Mash temp was supposed to hold 67 but might have not hold steady and I did manual readings during mash at around 68c

Still the odd air bubble so will leave it 1 more day before the crash. 1.015 confirmed with hydrometer.
Needs to be crashed and kegged by Saturday otherwise I would leave it longer.
Had a taste. It is super carbonated. No off flavours. Very lager tasting with a touch of sweetness.

I raised temp 1c just to try get the last bit done.

I found the problem. Woke up Saturday morning and found more stuff tastes like nothing to me. Then smell went completely, and I went for a COVID test. Positive. So yes, that's why it tastes like water. Everything tastes like water. Even strong coffee of pure lemon juice.
